About the Artist

Mak Wing-sum, Sammi was born in Hong Kong. She graduated from the Academy of Visual Arts, Hong Kong Baptist University. With printmaking and painting, she focuses on depicting everyday scenery and landscape with personal emotions. For Mak, artmaking is about creating memories and spaces. Through observing the reality, she constructs spaces that merge personal emotions with experiences. Her works embody processes of experimentation, as she often tests out the possibilities of various materials and colours. Mak thinks artmaking is a process to explore and face her inner self with honesty; at the same time, she hopes to visualise her imagination with art.

About the Exhibit

In the “Social Pattern” series, Mak Wing-sum, Sammi observes Hong Kong’s cityscape and explores how human behaviours can alter our surrounding environment. Recently, our daily lives have become surreal—constantly changing and completely new. With art, she selects and documents moments of her life. Every time Mak examines the cityscape, memories come flooding back. She hopes to reflect her emotions with brush strokes in monoprint. For her, this is a way to travel through time and space and wander between reality and imagination.
